It has been a tragic week in Israel with multiple terror attacks. Our hearts and minds are with the bereaved and wounded and all who are suffering. I join you and all Am Yisrael with fervent hope and prayer that there are safe and tranquil times ahead. This Shabbat we have the unique opportunity to take out and read from three Sifrei Torah. The Parsha of the week, the Rosh Chodesh reading (it's the first day of Nissan), and the HaChodesh reading (being the Shabbat that precedes the month of Nissan). We will read of the Mitzvah to sanctify the new moon each month, beginning with this one. As Jews, we mindfully mark the start of each month, when the moon is a mere sliver of light. We thank G-d for the wonderous miracles that are the sun, moon, stars and other celestial objects and phenomena. We acknowledge the waxing and waning of the moon, and express the trust we have in our Creator as we experience the ups and downs and phases of life. And we resolve to shine bright in the darkness, just like the moon, illuminating our surroundings and being a beacon for others. May we all be blessed with a healthy, successful and productive month. May it be one in which we celebrate our freedoms, past and present, and optimistically look towards the brightness that lies ahead. Shabbat Shalom and Chodesh Tov!

This week's PARSHA is Tazria - Hachodesh (Leviticus 12:1-13:59) The Parshah continues the discussion of the laws of tumah v’taharah, ritual impurity and purity. A woman giving birth should undergo a process of purification, which includes immersing in a mikvah (a naturally gathered pool of water) and bringing offerings to the Holy Temple. All male infants are to be circumcised on the eighth day of life. Tzaraat (often mistranslated as leprosy) is a supra-natural plague, which can afflict people as well as garments or homes. If white or pink patches appear on a person’s skin (dark red or green in garments), a kohen is summoned. Judging by various signs, such as an increase in size of the afflicted area after a seven-day quarantine, the kohen pronounces it tamei (impure) or tahor (pure). A person afflicted with tzaraat must dwell alone outside of the camp (or city) until he is healed. The afflicted area in a garment or home must be removed; if the tzaraat recurs, the entire garment or home must be destroyed. Parshat Hachodesh This being the Shabbat that falls on or before the first of Nissan, we also read the section of Hachodesh (Exodus 12:1–20), which relates G‑d’s words to Moses in Egypt two weeks before the Exodus, instructing us to set the Jewish calendar by the monthly new moon, and to regard Nissan as the “head of months.” G‑d also instructs to bring the Passover offering, to eat it with matzah and bitter herbs, and to abstain from leaven for seven days. © Copyright, all rights reserved, Chabad.org. |
